Demerol Abuse and Treatment

Demerol is the trade name (brand name) for Meperidine and is a man-made (synthetic) narcotic that's prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. Demerol is similar to morphine, it changes activity in the brain that normally senses pain. Demerol is an opioid agonist that has been labeled as a Schedule II controlled substance. Pain pills are abused every day by millions of people and Demerol is one of them.

Like any other prescribed painkiller, Demerol should be used as directed by a physician and when doing so, it is safe and effective for the treatment of pain. When narcotic pain pills like Demerol are miss-used or abused the individual can suffer serious health effects.

Demerol Hydrochloride (Meperidine) is prescribed in pill form or as Demerol Hydrochloride Syrup form and is taken orally. As with most prescription pain relievers, Demerol has the potential for abuse and can be habit-forming. This means tolerance to Demerol can take place and dependency can occur. Miss-use of Demerol can result in dependency, overdose and death. Mixing narcotic pain pills like Demerol with alcohol or other drugs can potentially be fatal.

Abuse of Demerol

Crushing Demerol and snorting this pain medication is one way users abuse this pain reliever. Some users dissolve pain medications like Demerol and inject it while others take large quantities to get high. Tolerance and addiction doesn't take long to occur as well as withdrawal symptoms when the user doesn't have any. Demerol overdose is always a serious risk to those that abuse or miss-use painkillers like Meperidine.
