Recent SAMHSA Study Looked into Average Day Substance Use Among Adolescents

After viewing a recent SAMHSA News Release, it appears we have a long way to go when it comes to educating our youth about the dangers involving the use of drugs and alcohol because their study results were staggering. Just the amount of adolescents using marijuana on an average day was unbelievable.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports on a typical day the amount of teens using pot could just about fill up the Indianapolis Speedway two and a half times. That's an enormous amount of teens because the Indianapolis Speedway has a seating capacity of 250,000 according to the news release.

Information below was also included on the SAMHSA report involving adolescent substance abuse behavior among teenagers 12 to 17 years old on an average day:

  • 881,684 smoked cigarettes
  • 646,707 smoked marijuana
  • 457,672 drank alcohol

The SAMHSA report also provides information regarding first time use of illicit substances on an average day among adolescents 12 to 17 years of age:

  • 7,639 adolescents consumed alcohol
  • 4,594 adolescents used an illegal drug
  • 4,000 smoked marijuana
  • 2,151 misused prescription pain relievers

After viewing the recent SAMHSA news release, substance use among our youth is still very much a problem. Adolescents have their whole life ahead of them and sadly the use of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription medications will only destroy their future dreams and happiness. We need to make every effort possible to educate our youth about the dangers involving substance abuse and obtain professional help for our children if substance use already is an issue, or becomes an issue in the future.
