In the late 30's anabolic steroids were developed for the treatment of hypogonadism. This is a condition where the testes don't produce the necessary amount of testosterone that's needed in men for normal healthy growth and development or sexual functioning.
Anabolic steroids are used when puberty is delayed in an individual and also for some kinds of impotency medical issues. Steroids are also given to people suffering from HIV if their bodies are deteriorating.
Steroids are a man-made substance which is similar to male sex hormones and they require a prescription for legitimate use. Steroids are classified as a Schedule III substance because there are legitimate medical uses for them. Once it was realized that taking steroids helped with muscle growth athletes and bodybuilders began to use and abuse them. Steroids can be ingested, injected into the muscle or comes in creams and gels that are rubbed into the skin. Using steroids are legal as long as the individual has a legitimate prescription for using them. Many people don't though, they use steroids to bulk up using large doses and this is illegal and dangerous.
Men tend to abuse steroids more than women but people of all ages abuse them throughout the United States. For the most part people 18 years of age and older abuse steroids but many high school students abuse them also.

Sometimes steroid user's abuse them in patterns in which they use large amounts in a certain amount of time then stop for a while, and eventually start again.

Some users mix different kinds of steroids together because they believe combining them together will have an effect on the end result producing larger muscle size.

Sometimes steroid users slowly increase their dose and how often they take them until they reach a certain point and then slowly reduce their dose till reaching the end of the cycle.
