Drug Treatment in Prison

With well more than half of all inmates currently incarcerated having a drug addiction and with the correlation between crimes and those who abuse drugs, it’s only smart for officials to provide drug treatment in prison.

The cost of housing these inmates is extremely high and the government feels that if they weren’t suffering from a drug addiction, many of those crimes wouldn’t have been committed in the first place.

Research has shown that many inmates both male and female committed the crimes they were incarcerated for to obtain money for their drug addiction.

The in prison drug treatment is aimed to provide inmates with a clean slate and a life of sobriety when they leave the system so that they won’t fall back into the same patterns once released.

This will cost society as a whole much less than it would to just incarcerate the people who have committed the crimes and not give them drug treatment. Drug abusers cost everyone money not just the people they steal from. The judicial system who tries them and the taxpayers who work hard for a living are paying a high price for putting these people with a drug addiction through the system. We might as well spend a few more dollars on each person to offer them a treatment program in prison.

There are several options for drug treatment in prison. These include pharmacological maintenance programs and different forms of psychotherapies. Some correctional institutes even practice an ancient Chinese method of acupuncture to reduce withdrawal symptoms and to keep inmates from having cravings.

The goal for giving inmates in prison drug treatment is more than just to return the individual to society without their former drug addiction. It is meant to lower the overall cost that drug users cause by committing crimes that are drug related.

Many inmates find a way to still smuggle drugs in jail despite all of the security methods that are present. These inmates then provide other inmates with their drug of choice to feed their drug addiction. It is for this reason that correctional facilities require drug testing and continue to monitor for drugs once a person becomes an inmate in their facility.
