New Cancer Drug Treatment

New research has revealed that a new cancer drug treatment could save a thousand lives per year, in specific those afflicted by breast cancer. The drug is reported to increase survival rates of breast cancer in post-menopausal women by 17 percent.

Addiction Recovery

The new drug called Exemestane was found to provide a dramatic reduction in deaths after two or three years of switching to the drug from Tamoxifen the current Gold Standard breast cancer treatment. The drug Tamoxifen was administered after surgery to dramatically reduce deaths by 33 percent. After another two to three years of Exemestane plus a further few years of follow up the survival rates were definite improvements over a just Tamoxifen treatment. Compared with no follow up drug therapy survival rates were 50% higher with Exemestane drug therapy. With 31,000 post-menopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer each and every year it is expected to allow a further 1,000 women to survive this condition. This new cancer drug treatment reduces the levels of oestrogen in the body which is strongly linked with the development of cancer. The current drug Tamoxifen only interferes with the activity of the present hormone. Switching drugs also has some additional benefits that are well worth considering. A Tamoxifen user can expect long term use of the drug to result in some serious side effects such as DVT and womb cancer whereas switching to the new drug Exemestane will prevent long term use and these possible side effects.

The drug is unfortunately not available everywhere or to everyone but it is recommended for post menopausal women to switch to Exemestane after two or three years on Tamoxifen thanks to this recent study. The drug is also called Aromasin (trademarked), and is only used for women who have undergone menopause because it is based on hormonal reduction. This new cancer drug treatment is used to treat not only the advanced stages of breast cancer but also the early stages as well but only after around 2 years and 9 months of treatment on Tamoxifen.

There are also some common side effects from taking this new cancer drug treatment such as hot flashes, fatigue and nausea. The most serious side effect this drug is known to produce is a high blood pressure level. This is checked for and monitored carefully and regularly whilst you are undergoing this type of new cancer drug treatment as well as whilst you are Tamoxifen.
