California Drug Rehab

Drug abuse is not the same as drug addiction, and does not always lead to addiction. Drug abuse is essentially ingesting a drug or substance for a purpose other than its original purpose—generally to get what is commonly termed as a 'buzz' or to alter one's state of consciousness. Examples of this sort of abuse is crushing and snorting xanax or oxycodone pills up the nasal cavity, huffing gasoline, or even just taking more than the recommended dosage of prescription meds. When a person starts to use drugs in manner not consistent with the recommended directions given there are two problems they may end up having to confront.

Addiction Recovery

The first issue they may encounter is developing a physical dependency on the drug. Many prescription drugs and narcotics are just as addictive as any “street” drug, such as meth, crack, cocaine, heroine, ect. This physical dependency will cause withdrawal symptoms as the effects of the drug begins to subside. So the person takes more of the drug to stop the onset of withdrawal, and over the course of time takes larger and larger quantities to keep the withdrawal symptoms away. This is what is known as physical addiction and sadly, in many cases can result in death due to an overdose of the drug being ingested.

The second problem that usually develops is a psychological addiction. Any drug, whether prescription or non-prescription, that alters ones consciousness can result in a possible psychological addiction. When a person feels that they can deal with emotional issues or social stress better after thay have had a pill, a snort, or even a drink, they come to rely on the drug of choice to be able to deal with day to day life. They have most likely developed a psychological addiction---and, like a physical addiction, this often leads down a long path of self-destructive behavior. Whatever form of addiction a person may be dealing with the best way to overcome that addiction is treatment in a drug rehabilitation center.

There are a number of rehab centers for people with an addiction to any type of drug in California. Anyone can find an California rehab center in just a few seconds by checking their local phone directory or going online and doing a search for California drug rehab centers.

For any one who has an addiction to a drug, or drugs, a process called detoxification, or 'detox' will be the first step in recovering from addiction. There are options for detox available now which can cut the pain and withdrawal time from several days to just a few hours. Check with all of the California drug rehabilitation centers which interest you to see what type of detox they offer. Rapid detox is not always available at all treatment centers.

All reputable drug rehab centers in California will include a course of psychiatric evaluation and treatment as well as treatment for the physical addiction. Usually the addict fears living without the drug they have come to rely on to get through, and it is often a very difficult process to try to get them to believe they live without the drug. A psychiatric evaluation determines what underlying psychological and emotional conditions make the addict feel the need for drugs, and the treatment will address those conditions to help the patient develop the skills and tools to be able to face life without the drug or drugs they have become dependent on.
