Alcohol Poisoning Treatment

Alcohol can be a great addition to a party or social event, and can help people to relax and enjoy themselves more than they may be able to without it, but overindulgence in alcohol can lead to extremely severe repercussions especially where the person’s health is concerned. Long-term overindulgence in alcohol can lead to alcohol addiction developing, and this is a serious disorder that can easily ruin relationships and even destroy lives. Even in the short term, consuming massive amounts of alcohol in one session, commonly referred to as “binge drinking”, can lead to alcohol poisoning.

Addiction Recovery

Alcohol poisoning is caused by having massive amounts of alcohol in the blood, which the body is not able to deal with. In most cases, at the very least unconsciousness will occur quite quickly and the person suffering from alcohol poisoning will usually start to vomit. This is the body’s way of trying to cleanse the body of the harmful substance. Sometimes however in more severe cases the person suffering from alcohol poisoning will require urgent medical attention. This can involve having the stomach “pumped” to remove the alcohol not yet processed by the body (to prevent the patient’s condition deteriorating further) and when conscious the patient may have to imbibe a substance that absorbs the alcohol and passes through the system.

Additional treatments may include an IV to rehydrate due the massive dehydration caused by excess alcohol consumption, and the patient may have to go through therapy sessions to learn more about the dangers of alcohol abuse and to treat any possible alcohol addiction the patient may be suffering from.
